The Terroir of the cigar

The cigar is like wine, is a matter of mixing . It is made by assembling two or more often, three different tobacco leaves providing a subtle balance of flavors, power and combustibility. This assembly is then wrapped in a sheet of binder to the desired shape, then the whole is covered by a wrapper whose purpose is primarily aesthetic.

The art of making a cigar is therefore that of finding the best joint (ligament) to achieve the desired taste of architecture. For generations manufacturers, Dutch, English and U.S. mainly, have sought to have the greatest possible diversity of tobacco and, in this context, tested and developed multiple terroirs.

cigar tobaccos are harvested around the world: Philippines, Canary Islands, Peru, Paraguay, Venezuela, Mexico, but the real quality is still not at the rendezvous.
Other countries have specialized in the cultivation of wrapper leaves: Ecuador, Brazil, Indonesia (Sumatra beautiful capes), USA (Connecticut famous capes) and Cameroon. The upper level

is occupied by countries all around the Caribbean Sea, which produce good quality cigars, especially since the Cuban revolution of 1949 has forced some of the best cigar makers in the country to seek new lands and states that the embargo United against Cuba from February 7, 1962 forced Americans to buy their cigars elsewhere.
Among them we find the Honduras and Nicaragua, whose development in cigars has long been hampered by an unstable political situation in which the Sandinista guerrillas blocked the initiatives in both countries. Ortega's party, the production has grown dramatically, mainly centered around Jalapa valleys in the region of Esteli in Nicaragua and Danli in eastern Honduras. With 100 million handmade cigars a year, that country is now the third largest in the world.

A ranking at the top of which there are - surprise - the Dominican Republic with 170 million handmade cigars a year. Is that the neighboring island of Cuba took advantage of the embargo on Cuba and the political instability in Central America. Davidoff provides the trigger on leaving Cuba in 1991 to settle noisily Dominican Republic and give it credibility that he lacked. The best plantations, located in the Cibao valley and the Yaque northwest of the country. They provide excellent filler leaves whose main characteristic is the light, forcing the Dominicans to import both stronger for their tobacco blends and wrapper leaves to produce their cigars.

Although Cuba is only the second largest producer of handmade cigars with about 140 million per year puros, they remain by far the best in the world. The reasons are many. Of course the work of men was, as always, paramount: it is in Cuba families of entrepreneurs have invented the art of producing cigars, the harvesting process, culture, maturation and production have been developed and agricultural engineers constantly develop plans for tobacco becoming more productive and resilient. But this would have been useless if Cuba had not presented under natural conditions (sunlight, humidity, rainfall, sea breezes and soil composition) constituent of soils producing tobacco whose quality has been unmatched thus far.

Cuba has five soils of tobacco ( Oriente, Remedios, Semi Vuelta, Partido and Vuelta abajo) which only two are eligible to produce sheets used in the manufacture of "Habanos"

Semi-Vuelta (between Havana and the Vuelta Abajo) and Oriente (in 'is, as its name implies) are exclusively used for cigarette production. Remedios, in the center of the island produces lower quality cigars, for the domestic market.
Note that in recent years, Cubans have decided to give new impetus to the land and especially Oriente Remedios, under the name of "Vuelta Arriba" (see map above). They produce cigars labeled "Habanos", but of lesser quality and lower cost. This is for example the case of Jose L. Marks Piedra Guantanamera and which are commercially successful interesting.

Partido , near Havana, is the land of early tobacco in Cuba but now produces almost more than wrapper leaves rather clear elsewhere.

the extreme west of the island lies the prestigious Vuelta Abajo whose red earth and sand were found from the eighteenth century a wealth absolutely incomparable and where are produced the best tobacco leaves, tripe like cape. is the mythical land of cigars in the world at the heart of which lies the enchanting valley of Vinales (above), heritage of humanity.

Female Doctor Check Sperm

Why so much hate? The

Everyone understands that non-smokers can be protected in their rights to live without being smoky by their neighbors table or desk. As such, everyone understands they are also organized into associations to obtain a formalization of these rights. It arrived by Decree No. 2006-1386 of 15 November 2006 which caused much ink: why a decree and not a law (which would have allowed a debate and a vote by the representatives of the people), why protecting non-smokers going on it by banning smoking meeting will be the only citizens of this country to be denied this fundamental right? There is much to say and we certainly will talk, because I see the sign of a glaze that is now descending on the notion of pleasure in France, yet the country's lifestyle. When will the ban glass of red wine, camembert from raw milk or pigs feet?

Associations of non-smokers have got that. These will now be able to have exclusive use of all the restaurants in France every day. One can find this result too and want to fight for the balance (in my case through the Association "Friends of Pleasures of Taste "), but there is nothing to them reproach. Their mission is to represent and defend their members and that is what they did. Nice job. The problem is

qu'enivrées by this success, some of them have decided, right after the meeting, to address the right of information and expression. Amateur clubs (the Cape of Epicurus, A Fistful of Cigar, Cigar and Company, ...) have been summoned to court. It's now the turn of magazines and Cigar Sensations, the Amateur de Cigare, Club and Cigar Cigar Co. and The Association of Non Smokers Rights will even assign Yves Belaubre the owner of Cigars and sensations, for are clearly intended to put on the straw.

How economically kill zones for exchange of information and those of their leaders returned there in the job of these associations? They clearly overstep their mandate. Why? I see no good reason. And here we are obliged to consider not very noble reasons.

Distinguished non-smoking members of associations, understand that everyone respects your legitimate struggle to live without tobacco. You have done well so far and achieved excellent results, but also understand that by going too far and slaughtering Yves Belaubre example, not only you commit questionable acts humanly, but you lose your legitimacy by arousing suspicion. This will not help you in your actions.

This is called the wrong road.

Behike, climax of the myth Cohiba

brand of Cuban cigars sold the most in the world is Monte Cristo, is the oldest Por Larrañaga, the one that has its factory is the most famous Partagas, the one with the widest range of cigars Romeo & Julieta is, names that sound like pillars of "cigaritude" Cuban. And yet, when you are raised in the streets of Old Havana by dealers to sly, it is none of these brands that will be written on the boxes that come out of their pockets as fast as a mojito from the hands of the bartender Floridita. For the brand that has the greatest attraction, much more recent, but manufactures its name and with a fairly narrow range but is now worldwide symbol of excellence Cuban cigar-maker, the brand, of course, c is Cohiba .

And we must recognize that with Cohiba cigars, one is assured of a good quality, regular and safe, but - throw the stone into the pond - which you rarely give the impression so extraordinary, smoking the best cigars in the world. Certainly there are exceptions like the recent Siglo VI and the very late Pyramids Limited Edition 2001 (picture below), but each of cigars from the rest of the range is easily surpassed by its counterparts from other brands, including including the renowned Robusto.

So why such a craze. Two main reasons. First is the cigar history of Fidel Castro and then it was very cleverly promoted by the Cubans to maintain the legend.

One day in 1963, attention is drawn to Fidel the smell of cigar, unknown to him but delicious. He realizes that "puro" which emerges is in the hands of his bodyguard Chicho and learn they are rolled him especially by his friend torcedor Eduardo Rivera. As of today Reviera roll the cigars long and thin (future Lanceros) for Fidel. And as it is sharer, he will receive some of his Cuban friends and strangers. So much so that Riviera can no longer keep up all alone and surrounded by eight women who will help him in his task, some of which we'll talk Norma Fernandez.
It was not until 1966 that, at the initiative of Celia Sanchez , female figure known but very influential of the Cuban Revolution, these cigars are brought to the baptismal font by the name of a brand new: Cohiba. Created for the occasion, she inspired the name that gave the Taino Indians to tobacco leaves rolled they smoked 500 years ago.

Then the marketing machine starts up. The range includes first three cigars: Lanceros, and Coronas Especiales Panatellas. All three of the Linea Classica (Robustos, and Esplendidos Exquisitos) did not appear until 1989, shortly before the actual enlargement of the range, the Linea 1492, the Siglos of I, II, III, IV and V, the Siglo VI dating him, in 2002.

With the characteristic of having ligament in his sheets having three instead of two fermentations, the Cohiba will be positioned very high quality, their prices are on average 50% more expensive than others. And it is a global success without being far from it, 50% better than the others. One can not help thinking - second stone in the pond (beware, it begins to be busy) - that the mere fact of being the most expensive that one could produce such success in smokers looking for more in a cigar Tasting a financial symbol ecstatic.

And this trend is not about to stop there because Habanos SA launched in February 2006 making "the most expensive cigar in the world," the " Behike ", named Taino shamans. It is a question of a cigar long (19 cm length Lanceros) and Cepo 52 (diameter of the Siglo VI). Only 100 boxes of 40 Behike will be produced and these 4000 cigars were all rolls El Laguito factory by the same person: Norma Fernandez (photo) which we spoke earlier. The price is 15 000 Euros box which clearly meets the original objective.

To offer these gems the most beautiful setting, Habanos has appealed to the French toymaker Elie Bleu, which is becoming more and more as the best manufacturer of cigars in the world. Made entirely in the workshops Elie Bleu sycamore, ebony, bone and stingray (ray skin), boxes, topped with a logo Cohiba central pearl, are individually numbered, like every other cigarette.
In total, it took two months of work, three hundred skins stripe of Indonesia two hundred and fifty pounds of ebony, more than a hundred shells of abalone China Sea, all for one hundred boxes. "An adventure!", As said the Head of Workshop Elie Bleu.

Finally, each box bears a plaque on behalf of the purchaser. Scoop on the issue, some plates are still virgins, what, when you are raised in the streets of Old Havana by scalpers offering you Behike, can you suggest that this is not fake . It would be the first time.

Pursuant to the Loi Evin 91-32, I remind you that "Smoking causes disease serious "and" Smoking kills ".

Major brands of cigars, Hoyo de Monterrey cigar

Second in the series on brands Cuban cigars , we lose ourselves in today Hoyo de Monterrey .

Hoyo de Monterey is primarily the story of a land, in a backwater of Western Cuba. This is true to say since the literal translation of the word "hoyo" is precisely "hole." By extension, it is actually a hole, a valley in the mountainous region of Vuelta Abajo, where produces the best cigar tobacco in the world. But

Hoyo de Monterey is also, as often in the history of Cuban brands, a family saga with multiple episodes, worthy of a TV series. The central character, a English native Taragon in Catalonia, called José Gener y Batet . He arrived in Cuba one morning in 1831 at the age of 13 years to work with his uncle, who operates a tobacco plantation called "the Majagua" with which it produces the same cigarillos name for the local market. Everything is fine for a while but, with age, Jose developed a strong ambition. He wants to tackle the world and not with cigarillos he will succeed.

In 1850, he founded therefore a cigar factory in Havana, then created the brand "The Escepcion " for the U.S. market. From there, the events will be linked together at a breakneck pace. Successful Brand "The Escepcion" allows it to acquire a holding in 1860 in Vuelta Abajo, named " Hoyo de Monterrey "Which one can still see the gate today. But only five years later he created the brand of the same name. Unlike "The Escepcion" cigars "Hoyo de Monterrey are softer and subtle for the English market.

In 1895, after 30 years of enlightened management but almost despotic, the House is one of the most successful of Cuba, with 350 employees. This is the moment chosen by Jose Gener to die during one of his visits to the homeland. His daughter takes over Lutgard Gener but unable to resist pressure from the family that gives priority to sugar plantations. It no surprise that in 1931, 100 years after the arrival of Jose, the two brands are sold Palicio Fernando and Ramon Fernandez, who already operate brands Punch and Belinda .

In the late 1940s, Hoyo is chosen by Zino Davidoff to produce his famous series of castles, he will eventually recover under its own brand in 1969.

Hoyo de Monterrey is today a leading brand of Cuban cigars, with a relatively wide range of 18 cigars, including 3 limited series of very good quality: Particulares 2000 and 2001, Piramides 2003 (below) and Epicure Especial 2004.

The 6 cigars from the series "The Hoyo" (of the Gods Gourmet, the mayor, the King, Prince and Deputy, in French) are quite disappointing and it is not within its that are the flagships from the house: the " Epicure No. 2 , a Robusto thin and light and especially the" Double Corona "classic among classics, which is one of my favorite cigars, particularly with some years of aging. Select

rather than box office from 50 to 25 and you will have the privilege to try one of the most successful Cuban cigar maker's art. True to the spirit of the brand, "Double Co (pictured below) is resolutely finesse more than power, while demonstrating outstanding architecture, carved, impressive accuracy. At ignition, the cigar leaves his beneficiary moved calmly in the tasting, letting himself almost desired. With an escalation level, it begins to distill its vegetal flavors, almost floral at first and then moving in a wooded register before to be further enriched by multiple spicy sensations. The brand inspires a feeling of fullness and balance of a great elegance, which allows to keep the distance without feeling too soon satiated.

Once is not custom, we recommend the accompaniment of an old Cuban rum (usually I have a strong preference for agricultural rums from Martinique). His gentleness and his side a little sweet, which irritate us with vitola who the real sponsor, is what to drink with a Hoyo. Without, of course, drinking as a "hoyo". According

Russian To English Mw2

Marketing evolving

Now the long version of an article published three months ago in a new magazine gourmet kitchens that I recommend very strongly: Gusto.
His publisher had the good idea to want a cigarette topic with an approach somewhat offset, that's good, I like write.

In Cuba, marketing gold brown
Certainly not when it engages in tasting a Havana that the amateur has the spirit occupied by questions of money. The pleasure is too full, too full to let parasitize by market considerations. One of the major pleasures of cigar is precisely this tendency to forget the concerns so-called major life every day to focus on the joys as simple as the touch of a cape, maternal monitoring of combustion or the perception escalation of aromatic sensations. Futile, apparently? Perhaps, but is not this just the beginning of wisdom?

Across the Atlantic, Cuba is a different story. Since June 23, 1817, when the abolition of the English royal monopoly allows Cuba to produce and export cigars, the Havana is certainly a pleasure, but above all a product. History of brands and factories is a real capitalist saga where one finds all the ingredients of a novel in the Sulitzer: soared young innovative entrepreneurs, family dynasties turbulent, bankruptcies, attempted takeover by foreign trusts, ... In short, more picturesque, the game's traditional liberalism, but unbridled fertility, leading to the Havana sit atop the hierarchy of the produce of land and labor of men is the cigar.

All this ends abruptly in 1959, the date of the seizure of power by the Castro regime, which nationalized all economic activities of the island, including cigarette maker. A period of stagnation during which Fidel Castro, even if its Lanceros still smokes, is especially busy finding a place in the galaxy to the red star which, it is key demand of essential commodities like sugar.
The fall of the Communist empire is a disaster for Cuba, which is deprived of its main source of foreign currency, while still under U.S. embargo since 1962. In the mid-1990s, Fidel, while paradoxically himself stopped smoking, is launching an ambitious plan to develop the production of cigars that happen in 5 years from 50 to nearly 150 million Havana, to arrive to be between 5 and 10% of foreign exchange earnings of the country. With the obvious consequences of such rapid growth under a regime of this kind: lower quality, disorganization, lack of listening to the wishes of the consumer and therefore strategic vision.

There was only one choice, brave as far from the Marxist ideals: to get help from foreign experts with knowledge of international market and therefore able to adapt in order to optimize economic results . If Tabacuba, the company responsible for production remains 100% Cuban Habanos, Habanos SA responsible for marketing renter did in 1999 at 50% the company Altadis , merged the same year the French Seita and from English Tabacalera.

Spurred on by new blood, Habanos SA will fundamentally transform the sector around key ideas in the purest classical marketing. Step 1: Dust and rationalizing existing product lines (almost 600 different cigars), Step 2: revitalization by upgrading the image and creating new products tailored to market demands. And at no charge!

Since 2002, the number of references is divided by two is the abandonment of 300 cigars, some classics like the Prince of Wales Romeo y Julieta. All with a true sense of the range around a the Pyramid of Marks (cons graphic below), created by the Cubans in 1988 to establish a hierarchy of quality, but reinstated, or rather rigorously.

Conversely, we are witnessing the introduction, very rare, however, new cigars, the design is the direct result of actual studies to meet the demands of a changing market more and more. Thus, to the growing success of large diameter cigars robusto type were launched from the Montecristo Edmundo (Robusto long, "said" cañonazo ") and the small Robusto from Hoyo de Monterrey.

In parallel, the year 2000 saw the emergence of "Edicion Limitada cigars that are not found in the ranges that are produced on time and with aged tobacco leaves, a beautiful dark color" maduro " . With the notable exception of 2002, each year has seen since its share of limited editions, some of which are already stars like the Partagas Piramides Cohiba Sublime 2000 or 2004. The first "Edicion Limitada" (2000 and 2001) are now unavailable for sale and has begun to fuel the market for collectors. Curiously in 2006 rééeditions of EL are success of 2000 (Montecristo Robusto) and 2001 (Piramides Cohiba and Partagas Serie DN ° 3). See cons below.

Today, although we are sometimes frustrated by occasional irregularities, it is clear that the Cuban cigar recovered in running order, determined to be ready for the day, not necessarily too long ago when the U.S. embargo is lifted. That day, thousands of new users, deprived of Cuban cigars for years, will probably want to catch up and it will be another revolution.

Meanwhile, after this little interlude historico-economic let's get back to really important things: a dear friend offered me a Gold Medal of Bolivar and since I have it in hand I can not let go. I can tell you that this product type with one hand has not been easy and rewarding for me, I will not turn on this.

Major brands of cigars: Cigars Cuaba

Today, I propose the first of a series on brands of Cuban cigars . It begins with Cuaba just for the delicious reminder Divinos I smoked this weekend.

By closely observing the 200 guests of this wonderful evening at the Claridge Hotel in London, we finally noticed a little man, visibly uncomfortable in his tuxedo rentals. One could almost believe he is there by accident, if it was this amazing glimmer of emotion in his eyes. For this

November 19, 1996 is an exceptional evening for Juan Carlos Gonzales Izquierdo, Master Wheeler for 45 years at the factory Briones Montoto (formerly Romeo y Julieta).
In fact, Habanos SA, the global distribution entity of Cuban cigars, has launched a new brand, which had not happened since 1968. But above all, and that few people know the room, he is Juan Carlos Gonzales Izquierdo, a man of tradition, which in the original.

The recall traditions, it is found primarily in the name of the new brand Cuaba, which takes us back to the time of Christopher Columbus. Taino Indians who inhabited Cuba at the time already rolled and smoked tobacco leaves into a cylinder, they called in their language Cohiba. To turn it on, they used a local shrub with large burning qualities, which grows also still on the island, and they called Cuaba.

Above Cuaba cigars will produce only shape pointed at both ends, or so-called double figurado figurado perfecto. This form is one that, in the nineteenth century, the Cuban cigar widespread worldwide, particularly in Europe where these cigars were very popular during the intermission entertainment. She has also, in France where it is called the distaff side, give shape to the core of our newsagents.

The twentieth century will see the triumph of cigars cylindrical parajo said, so much so that figurados in Cuba will disappear from the 30s. We see indeed appear modules pointed at one end, called figurado torpedo or shell, the most famous are the Montecristo No. 2 and more recently the Vegas Robaina Unicos (discussed shortly), but this does not our friend Juan Carlos.

This one rolls figurado perfecto for personal use (its smoked) so he says "do not lose the tradition." Although it takes, because if after many years of tenacity he finally managed to convince the factory to get into the adventure, he is the only in Cuba capable of running these cigars so special. Our Featured Torcedor will therefore recruit and train specially ten young riders who now produce six brand cigars. Four appeared from the outset (Exclusivos, sherries, Traditional, Divinos) and two others later (Solomon and Diadema). A seventh, Distinguidos, part (with Montecristo and Cohiba Robusto Pyramid) of the three cigars produced in limited edition in 1999, presented commemorative jars "millennium", now found.

None has a huge wealth of sensations "taste" but their balance is elsewhere. You can not hide a certain excitement at the prospect of reliving the glory days inside the nineteenth century, nor the pleasure of smoking a vitola visibly different from others, so beautiful in appearance, a little eccentric. We must also mention the unmistakable touch of the cigar with flatter curves nicely if the palm of the hand.

by their particular shape, the Cuaba offer a slower start than the shells for example, but also devoid of acrimony. And that, logically up their thickest point at which the section is reduced, there appears a greater concentration of flavors. These are good cigars (especially Divinos, my favorite breakfast) which gradually gained in regularity and which are elegant balance that will just smoke them at any time of day. As such, they present the great and rare quality of knowing both the smoker to please and seduce the inexperienced amateur more experienced.

A big thank you to Juan Carlos Izquierdo therefore Gonzales, who is definitely much better than a cigar roller pillar cocktails.

in a friendly

Passion!

is true for the cigar as for many other things in life, there is a world of difference between lovers and enthusiasts. The first are normal people who enjoy the product at the time and enjoy peace of mind. The second are the mentally ill have all that in mind time, on the lookout for any news to fuel their thirst for discoveries. The former are useful for second in that they may tend to bring them gently into the real world by putting everything in perspective a bit. The second is useful to first in what they can do just the opposite, ie to help transform a simple moment into a pleasant experience full of sensations and variety.

Like all dichotomies, this course has its limits and the boundary between the two states is largely unclear. For my part, even if the passion inside me (I resist the strong temptation to pun), I too much to learn to pretend to help anyone to pass to the other side of the mirror, the real aficionados. but whenever I learned something about cigars, it has increased my enjoyment of the smoking , and it is precisely the goal of this blog: share knowledge and feel for even more fun inside me (there, I could not resist, sorry, passion and fun really going too well with the words pun).

Finally, consumption of cigars is an activity that remains attached an image, sometimes justified, of "pédantitude" and a bit condescending mannerism that I find so removed from the concept of tasting as friendly as we deviate as much as possible. Being seriously agree, but never taken seriously.

And if that interests few more readers and contributors, why not? The more one is crazy, the more we become.

Oh, I almost forgot: According to the Evin Law 91-32, I remind you that "Smoking causes serious diseases" and "Smoking kills"

Salud!
